Bournemouth pubs are to drop their minimum price agreement in favour of a policy focused on how venues are run.

Around 80 pubs and bars in Bournemouth's Townwatch scheme have agreed not to sell drinks below £1.50 for the last five years. However, with the economic downturn some members have broken ranks, sparking a review of the policy. Luminar Leisure's Lava & Ignite club sold drinks for 80p before Christmas.

There is also the competition from JD Wetherspoon's 99p a pint offer in the town.

"The members of Bournemouth Townwatch decided that the policy should evolve further and a review has recommended an update to the responsible operators policy," said night time co-ordinator Jon Shipp.

"The new policy includes a stronger collective approach to understanding the effect of retail sales to activity outside of the venues.

"In effect, Townwatch will be able to consider premises as being in breach of the responsible operators policy if for instance anti-social behaviour on the street can be evidenced as linked to the operations of a particular premises.

"The new policy is also geared to speeding up the process that policy breaches can be dealt with, or solutions determined even more quickly outside of a formal procedure."
